In 2009 Randa Stephanos Hakim and Sherin A. Wahab received an Ibsen Scholarship for their project "Translating Ibsen to Arabic."
The ultimate objective of this project is to translate all Ibsen’s plays directly for Norwegian to Arabic. The already existing translations are done through a third language. The goal is for the new translations to be as similar as possible to the original when it comes to linguistic meaning and atmosphere.
The project is a part of greater project, “The Arabic Ibsen”, led by professor Gunvor Mejdell at the University of Oslo, Norway. This project includes among other things an investigation of already existing translations and publications and new translations of not yet translated plays.
Randa Stephanos Hakim is an experienced translator having translated from Arabic to English several political research papers, journalism political analysis, resolutions by the Arab League and other regional and international Arab speaking organisations, translation of poetry and prose from English and Arabic into French in the book titled ”Desert et Poesie” of the French photographer Patrick Longueville, translation from English to Arabic of a study on Ibsen’s life and works prepared by Prof. Dr. Samir Sarhan.
Sherin A. Wahab has experience as project coordinator for Ibsen 2006 and ”Peer Gynt in Giza”, Terje Vigen staged by Thomas Høgh and Martine Rød and NORLA, a translation project of Norwegian literature.
