For Someone Like Me?
By Lavleen Kaur
In collaboration with Dramatikkens Hus and Ibsen Scope
Lavleen Kaur was crowned by Norwegian media as Henrik Ibsen’s first lady in 2006, as she made history by being the first woman ever to be casted for three leading roles at Norway’s three most prestigious theatres, at Nationaltheatret as Nora, at Riksteateret as Hedda Gabler, and Centralteateret as Elida Wangel/Ekanta Warma.
“Someone like me?” is based on her memoirs and experiences as a diverse actress finding her place in prominent Norwegian institutions of the time. Where the battle of who owned the right to define what racism and professionalism was, played out more than art itself. It questions if the times and attitudes within Norwegian theatre walls really have changed that much during the past 20 years.
Lavleen Kaur
Lavleen Kaur is born and brought up in Oslo by parents who migrated to Norway from Punjab, India, in the mid 1970s. In sharp contrast to the artist described above, Lavleen Kaur is also a Criminologist. She has been researching on social control, othering, integration, racism, war conflicts, generational traumas etc., at the University of Oslo- in her parallel world to the stage, TV and films.
In her work she has been focused on contributing to integration and understanding between her two worlds. Both as an academic and artist, as well as a Norwegian- Indian. She has often chosen the stage to convey her research material, and created art to find the data material for her academic work. As an actress, director, scriptwriter, choreographer & scriptwriter.
«For Someone Like Me?» is made in near and dear collaboration with director & dramaturg Kai Johnsen. With support from Den Mangfoldige Scene.
